Open-source motherboard runs full Linux OS – Only 89$

An open-source hardware group on October 2011 announced an $89 credit-card sized motherboard based on an ARM processor that could be used for robotics, gaming and medical devices.

BeagleBoard’s BeagleBone development board is targeted at the open-source hardware community, which includes hobbyists and engineers writing code for hardware with open-source specifications. Some BeagleBoard projects include bringing Linux-based Android and Ubuntu operating systems to its hardware.

The BeagleBone runs a full version of Linux and a full-featured web server, BeagleBoard said in a statement. The board is based on Texas Instruments’ $5 Sitara AM335x ARM Cortex-A8 processor, which can deliver 720MHz of performance. TI announced the processor on Monday.

The board may not be for use in smartphones, tablets or PCs, said Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist at In-Stat. It is mostly for embedded systems running specific applications, and could also be used in audio-visual systems and projectors.

One device developed around the board is the Smart Pill Box, which is a device that lets off an alarm at a specific time to remind Alzheimer’s patients to take medicine.

The open-source boards are cheap to implement, and a lot of development is based on the ARM processor and Linux OS, McGregor said. Decades of development around Linux for open-source hardware has created some easy-to-implement applications for devices.

Despite some experimentation, open-source hardware may not reach smartphones and tablets soon, McGregor said. Hardware requirements for those devices are much more demanding and dynamic, and devices makers prefer to implement their own chip designs. But the possibilities are exciting, and some of the latest chips from companies like Qualcomm include the latest graphics and communication capabilities, McGregor said.

Other open-source projects include OpenCores, which hosts open-source processing cores, the microcontroller-based Arduino, and Bug Labs, which offers hardware for devices such as wireless devices and cameras.

The BeagleBone measures 3.4 inches by 2.1 inches (8.6 centimeters by 5.3 centimeters). It has Gigabit Ethernet, 3D graphics, USB 2.0 and microSD controllers.

Installing Neembuu

1. Double click the jar file.(Common for all OSes).

(In linux, you should right click the jar file and select properties and mark it as executable in that properties window)

2. If double clicking doesn’t work, open your console or terminal
and change path to NeembuuUploader folder and type “java -jar NeembuuUploader.jar”

Uploading:-

1. At first run, you’ll be asked for login details so that your files will be uploaded right into your account.

2. Click “Select File(s)” button. You can rather drag and drop (any number of) files over the Neembuu Uploader window.

3. Click “Select Hosts” and select your favorite hosts. You’ll never have to select again unless you want to change.

4. Click “Add to queue”.. See if the files are in the order you want. If not, use the 4 “move to …” buttons.

5. Click “Start Uploading.” That’s it..

IBM sametime installation in Linux

IBM released sametime version 8.5.1 for Linux based installer. For downloading the software you need to registered and get the download.

After downloading the package. Run the below command in terminal.

ubuntu 11.10 installation step by step

I have installed ubuntu 11.10 this month after verifying various comments about the OS version stability.

I have already installed ubuntu 11.04 in my notebook. So in this article I am describing method of taking the backup old installation files and doing the fresh install and restoring it.

After boot from live cd, open the terminal and type

#sudo bash

For root login.The type

#mount

command for check the device details

As per the second screen shot you can easily understand that my older installation is on /dev/sda6 and remainig are windows partition.

Then I have created the folder called test and mounted the windows partition on it.

After that I have created folder ‘test1″ for mount the Linux partition on it, Please refer the above screen shot. Then copy the /home/sahab into the windows mounted directory test.

Ubuntu 11.10 Wireless issue

I have found a problem when upgrading to ubuntu 11.10 regarding the network manager

After upgrading the wireless connection didn’t work I thought it was a problem related to the wlan driver.

Finally I have followed below steps for resolving the issue

Open the terminal

Alt+F2 type gnome-terminal

then run the below command

$sudo apt-get remove –purge network-manager

uninstalled the networkmanager

$sudo apt-get install wicd

Installed the wicd for fixing the issue.
