ubuntu 11.10 installation step by step

I have installed ubuntu 11.10 this month after verifying various comments about the OS version stability.

I have already installed ubuntu 11.04 in my notebook. So in this article I am describing method of taking the backup old installation files and doing the fresh install and restoring it.

After boot from live cd, open the terminal and type

#sudo bash

For root login.The type

#mount

command for check the device details

As per the second screen shot you can easily understand that my older installation is on /dev/sda6 and remainig are windows partition.

ubuntu 11.10 install copying the olde installer file

Then I have created the folder called test and mounted the windows partition on it.

After that I have created folder ‘test1″ for mount the Linux partition on it, Please refer the above screen shot. Then copy the /home/sahab into the windows mounted directory test.

Today I have changed the grub splash image of ubuntu 11.10. The steps are given below.

Open the terminal

Type the following cmmand

$wget http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/5632/nebulae.jpg

$mv $HOME/nebulae.jpg $HOME/nebula.jpg

$sudo mv $HOME/nebula.jpg /usr/share/images/grub/nebula.jpg

enter your root password to place the nebula in your grubs boot images….

now were going to remove the old desktop base script and replace it with a more stellar one….
do this block of code to remove.

sudo rm /usr/share/desktop-base/grub_background.sh

sudo su

write new script 4 background on boot

cat > /usr/share/desktop-base/grub_background.sh << EOF
WALLPAPER=/usr/share/images/grub/nebula.jpg
COLOR_NORMAL=light-green/black
COLOR_HIGHLIGHT=green/light-gray
EOF
update-grub
exit

and press return to exit god mode, reboot to test.... it is a 1280x1024 image, and might require editing
a file i already edited to change the menu size to fit the image.but for the most part this was a
nagging hidden system when trying to edit /etc/grub.d/05_debian* only to have a strange variable
over ride what you set. and this is what you get when bob punishes your boot loader settings

Today I have tried my client PC run shutdown and reboot command without being enter sudo password. The details given below

Today I have tried my client PC run shutdown and reboot command without being enter sudo password. The details given below

Use the command “sudo visudo” to edit the file. Now look for the line “# User alias specification” and add a list of users as follows:#

User alias specification
User_Alias USERS = user1, user2, user3

Now look for the line “# Cmnd alias specification” and add a command list as follows:

# Cmnd alias specification
Cmnd_Alias SHUTDOWN_CMDS = /sbin/shutdown, /sbin/reboot, /sbin/halt

Now look for the line “%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL” and add the command which will let USERS give SHUTDOWN_CMDS without a password

Code:

:%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL
USERS ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: SHUTDOWN_CMDS

Now those specified users can use the commands “sudo shutdown”, “sudo halt”, and “sudo reboot” without being asked for your password.

EDIT: By the way, the reason that these commands can’t be used by normal users is that Linux was designed as a multi-user system. You don’t want one user shutting down the system while others are using it!
